At the National Center "Russia" in Moscow, the presentation of the "Arctic Dossier" — Russia’s national report within the framework of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030) — highlighted the growing role of the Arctic Zone of Russia in the nation’s economy and environmental strategy.
Enterprises in the Arctic currently generate approximately 6% of Russia’s gross domestic product and about 10% of total exports, with their contribution expected to grow further, said Alexey Chekunkov, head of the Ministry for the Development of the Far East and Arctic.
“However, in certain sectors, such as gas, rare earth valuable metals, and fertilizers, the Arctic Zone plays a particularly significant role, and its role and share in production will only increase in the future,” he added.
Chekunkov emphasized that growth must remain environmentally responsible.
“Undoubtedly, any development of cities and businesses must be balanced with environmental well-being, and I confirm, we can take pride in the Russian Federation’s approach to the fragile ecosystem of the Russian Arctic,” the minister said.
Economic incentives have played a central role in stimulating investment in the region. Thanks to preferential regimes and priority development areas, more than one thousand new projects have been launched in the Arctic, attracting over 2.5 trillion rubles (almost $30 billion) in investments.
The government is also planning further steps to strengthen the development framework. Earlier, President Vladimir Putin proposed introducing a unified preferential regime for businesses across the entire territory of the Far East and Arctic starting in 2027.
