Pharaoh's Stolen Gold Bracelet Melted Down, Sold for Few Thousand Dollars, Egyptian Authorities Say

A restoration specialist stole the priceless artifact belonging to King Amenemope from the Egyptian Museum (EMC) in Cairo and sold it, resulting in a chain of transactions that ultimately saw the bracelet sold to a smelter, the Interior Ministry said.

The total value received from the sale of the 3,000-year-old gold bracelet was approximately $3,735, according to the authorities. All four individuals involved have confessed and face legal action.

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities had previously reported the bracelet's disappearance. The piece, dating back to the 21st Dynasty, vanished from the museum's conservation lab.

The EMC, home to over 170,000 artifacts, including a vast collection of pharaonic antiquities, has tasked a special committee to review the artifacts of the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East.
