Ethiopia Seeks Sea Access Peacefully Through International Law, Prime Minister Says
Staying a “geographical prisoner” is no longer possible, Abiy Ahmed stated at the inauguration of his book, "The Medemer State," in Addis Ababa.
"We cannot think of a country the size of Ethiopia to remain closed and hand over this status quo to the next generation,” he stressed.
Ethiopia is looking forward to being granted access to the Red Sea as a means of development and future prospects, according to the prime minister.
“We don’t believe that war and conflict are necessary to achieve this. That is why we have been waiting in patience for five years,” he said.
This timeline aligns with Ethiopia's gradual escalation of diplomatic talks and agreements, including the significant 2024 Memorandum of Understanding with Somaliland, which aimed to grant Ethiopia access to a coastline and a naval base.
