South Africa Poised to Shape Future of Multilateralism at UN's 80th General Assembly, Says UN Official
South Africa, the current G20 president, is expected to advocate for a more inclusive, equitable multilateral system at the UN General Assembly, according to Nelson Muffuh, UN Resident Coordinator in South Africa.
The assembly will bring together over 150 world leaders, including President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Muffuh noted in an op-ed that the session will feature critical discussions on:
sustainable development
climate action
AI governance
the Palestinian crisis
With the UN turning 80, the assembly represents an opportunity for Africa to transition from being a beneficiary to a co-creator of global governance, he wrote.
“These convenings are not just ceremonial,” the UN official said. “This is South Africa’s and Africa’s moment to lead, to partner, and to act. Not just to honor the past, but to build the future.”
