Ethiopia Should Pursue Membership in Arab League, Says MFA Ex-Spokesperson
Arab League membership could bring strategic and diplomatic benefits given Ethiopia's geographic proximity, historical ties, and existing relationships with Arab nations, according to Dina Mufti.
The membership would allow Addis Ababa to directly participate in regional discussions and protect its interests, Mufti, now a member of the House of People's Foreign Relations Committee, said, according to local media.
Despite past tensions related to Ethiopia's GERD, Mufti urged a focus on mutual interests and stronger bilateral ties to facilitate Ethiopia's inclusion in the 22-member body.
"Most of our neighbors are full members, and the rest hold observer status. We are not asking for a favor — our inclusion would be a reflection of existing realities. I believe our close relations with many member states will work in our favor," he said.
