UN’s Gaza Decision Strengthens Africa’s Case for Colonial Reparations, Zimbabwean Expert Believes

The UN’s recognition of genocide in Gaza does more than spotlight Israel’s crimes — it also strengthens Africa’s call for justice over its own historical wounds. Martin Zharare of Citizens Against Economic Sanctions argued that the decision should empower Africans to confront the legacy of colonialism.

“The people of Africa must stand up in support of what South Africa did. And it must give them the impetus, the power, the will to say: It can be done,” he told Sputnik Africa.

For him, the atrocities Palestinians face mirror the injustices Africa has endured since colonization — cultural destruction, loss of heritage, and systemic exploitation.

Zharare demanded reparations:

“They destroyed our heritage, they destroyed our culture, they destroyed our languages, destroyed everything that we hold dear to ourselves. And by doing that, today we are saying we need to be compensated.”

He underscored that international institutions like the ICJ are not owned by the West, even if they are headquartered in New York or Brussels, and “were made for the whole world.”

In Zharare's view, Gaza is proof that persistence and legal pressure can yield recognition.
