South Africa’s Stand: Africa’s Voice Against Genocide Grows Louder, Says NGO Head
When South Africa brought its case against Israel to the ICJ in late 2023, it stood almost alone. But Martin Zharare, Executive Director of the Zimbabwean NGO Citizens Against Economic Sanctions, said that moment changed everything.
“The South African voice was the catalyst in starting this whole process, which is now reverberating, and Israel cannot stand it alone,” he told Sputnik Africa.
He recalled how Western powers celebrated Israel’s actions while Palestinians were “being massacred for 24 hours.” South Africa’s stand drew American retaliation — "America also stood up and said, 'We are sanctioning you, South Africa, for standing with the Palestinians'" — but it also inspired other nations to follow.
Now, as the UN recognizes genocide, Zharare believes the tide has turned: Israel faces growing isolation while "the American empire is crumbling."
