Ethiopia's Bishoftu International Airport to Be Smart Hub, Boosting African Connectivity & BRICS Ties, Says Official

"[The airport] will fulfill our commitment which we started eight decades ago under the motto of bringing Africa together and closer to the world," Ethiopian Airlines' Chief Commercial Officer, Lemma Yadecha Gudeta, told Sputnik Africa.

Initially accommodating 16 million passengers annually, the airport will ultimately serve 110 million passengers, featuring dual runways and a vast 1.5 million square meter area upon completion, according to Lemma.

Here are key benefits that the hub will deliver for Ethiopia, the continent and beyond, as outlined by the speaker:

🟠The airport is expected to boost tourism, with Ethiopian Airlines targeting 15 million tourists by 2035;

🟠The new airport's lower altitude (1,923 meters above sea level, 400 meters lower than Addis Ababa airport) will improve aircraft efficiency and reduce carbon emissions;

🟠Given Ethiopia's strategic location, the new hub will facilitate increased movement of people and goods among African and major BRICS nations.
