Malawi Heads to General Elections on Tuesday — Latest Snapshot
Seventeen presidential candidates are competing for the top post in the country of 22 million people, including:
🟠incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera;
🟠Chakwera's predecessor Peter Mutharika (2014-2020);
🟠former President Joyce Banda (2012-2014).
If no candidate secures over 50% of the vote, a second round will be held.
Voters will also elect members of parliament and local councilors.
This vote comes after a historic 2020 rerun in which the Constitutional Court annulled Mutharika’s victory over irregularities, paving the way for Chakwera’s win. Analysts therefore expect a tight race between Chakwera and Mutharika.
According to local media, 7.2 million people are registered to vote. Polls will be open from 6 am to 4 pm local time, with results expected within a week.
