Ethiopia's GERD Project Benefits Beyond National Borders: Diplomat

"Ethiopian people across from all walks of life have been contributing to the construction of [the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam], so all Ethiopians have left their footprints on the dam, from the officials down to the street sweepers," Ambassador Nebiyu Tedla, Director General of Public Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, told Sputnik Africa.

The GERD aligns with the African Union's Agenda 2063 infrastructural programs, specifically aiming to connect the continent through energy, he noted.

Ethiopia, as an energy hub, will continue to connect the region, play a dynamic role in lifting millions of Africans out of poverty, the ambassador emphasized.

The dam will will provide reliable, inexpensive electricity to local industrial sites, enabling sustainable production, the ambassador said. He noted that Ethiopia is already exporting energy to Djibouti, Kenya, and Sudan — and even as Sudan faces serious difficulties, Ethiopia continues to supply electricity without interruption. “That is being done for your brother next door,” the ambassador said.
