Tanzania & Kenya to Create Joint Plan to Sustainably Manage Mara River & Protect It From Environmental Threats

Discussions are underway to create a framework ensuring sustainability and enabling social and economic benefits for citizens of both countries, Tanzania's Lake Victoria Basin Water Board Director General Renatus Shinhu said during Mara Day commemorations.

The plan will cover water use for domestic, agricultural, livestock, and other economic activities.

The Mara River has a vital role in ecology, biodiversity, and livelihoods, Shinhu emphasized, requiring joint stewardship amidst climate change and unsustainable practices. Enforcement measures are already underway to protect the river's sources, he noted.

Aligning water usage with the river's capacity is essential, and communities have a shared duty to protect and conserve it, noting that deforestation, illegal mining, and water pollution can be addressed through joint action, said Tanzania's Ministry of Water Permanent Secretary Mwajuma Waziri.

As part of the 14th Mara Day commemorations, participants planted trees and installed boundary markers in Kirumi Village, Butiama District, Tanzania.
