Men Now Allowed to Take Wives' Surname in South Africa, Constitutional Court Says
"This custom also came into existence as a result of legislation that was introduced by countries that colonized African countries south of the Sahara," the court stated on Thursday.
Historically, in many African cultures, it was common that women kept their surnames after the marriage, and children often inherited their mother's family name, it added.
