South Sudan's First Vice President Machar Charged With Murder, Treason & Crimes Against Humanity
Riek Machar was charged for his alleged involvement in March militia attacks against federal forces, South Sudan's Justice Minister Joseph Geng announced on Thursday.
President Salva Kiir suspended Machar from his position, according to a state radio report. In addition, Kiir also dismissed Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol, who is facing charges alongside Machar, as per the report.
Machar has been under house arrest since March, linked to attacks by the White Army militia in Nasir.
Evidence indicates the White Army operated under the command of leaders within the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army-in Opposition, including Machar, Geng stated. He added that 20 people were indicted alongside Machar, with 13 currently at large.
