Mauritius to Boost Security, Infrastructure & Jobs with $680M India Package

“This package is not an assistance. It is an investment in our shared future,” India's PM Narendra Modi stressed.

The deal includes:

$440M in grants and loans for major infrastructure projects: a new air traffic control tower, motorway and ring road development, and modernization at Port Louis.

$215M in grants for healthcare and innovation: construction of a 500-bed national hospital, a veterinary school, an Ayush center of excellence, and new helicopters.

$25M in budgetary support this year.

The package also strengthens maritime security with Indian-backed surveillance of Mauritius’s vast exclusive economic zone and support for operations in the Chagos Islands.

Modi highlighted the historic links between India and Mauritius and reaffirmed that a “free, open, secure, stable and prosperous Indian Ocean” is a shared priority.

Mauritian PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam welcomed the support, noting India’s crucial role in infrastructure, security, and health, while emphasizing the symbolism of relying on India, not the UK, for maritime capacity in Chagos.
