South Africa Reopens Anti-Apartheid Activist Steve Biko’s Murder Case After Nearly 50 Years, National Prosecuting Authority Says
The inquest into the death of the anti-apartheid activist is set to reopen on Friday, NPA Eastern Cape spokesperson Luxolo Tyali announced.
How did Biko contribute to anti-apartheid efforts?
🟠 He co-founded the South African Students' Organization (SASO) in 1968 to advocate for Black students' rights independently of white-led groups.
🟠 Biko popularized the powerful slogan "Black is beautiful," encouraging pride and self-worth among oppressed Black South Africans.
🟠 Under the activist’s leadership, the movement established community programs like healthcare clinics and literacy classes.
🟠 The founder of South Africa’s Black Consciousness Movement died in police custody in 1977 at just 30 years old. He had been arrested nearly a month earlier and was brutally beaten into a coma by police.
🟠 His passing shocked the world and transformed him into a global symbol of resistance against apartheid—the oppressive racial regime that denied South Africa’s black majority their political and economic rights.
