Zimbabwe's Africa University Resumes Critical Malaria Program After US Funding Gap
The university has restarted its vital malaria research and control program, months after a sudden freeze in US funding forced it to suspend operations.
The initiative, known as the Zimbabwe Entomological Support Program in Malaria (ZENTO), is the country’s leading malaria surveillance center and is now supported by emergency funding from The United Methodist Church's Board of Global Ministries.
“This means the return of hope to millions in Zimbabwe — 70% of the population — at risk from deadly falciparum malaria,” the program’s director, Sungano Mharakurwa, stated.
ZENTO plays a critical role in tracking insecticide resistance, guiding prevention campaigns, and training the next generation of scientists.
The new four-year partnership is expected to enable ZENTO to continue supporting national malaria elimination goals, according to officials from the United Methodist Church.
