Syria and Russia Signal 'New Historical Phase' in Bilateral Relations: Russian Deputy PM
Syrian FM Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani and Russian Deputy PM Alexander Novak met in Damascus on Tuesday.
Al-Shaibani stressed that “Israeli attacks are a direct threat to the stability of the region” and highlighted Syria’s shift toward transparency, including cooperation with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
He affirmed that Syria seeks “honest partners” and welcomes Russian cooperation in reconstruction, energy, agriculture, and health on “a fair and transparent basis.”
Novak emphasized that “this new historical phase will see relations between the two peoples built on mutual respect,” noting Russia’s readiness to support infrastructure restoration, humanitarian aid, and cultural and educational exchanges.
He also proposed resuming the intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation.
With nearly 4,000 Syrians studying in Russia and talks spanning defense, energy, and economic development, both sides presented the visit as a step toward strengthening stability in Syria and the wider region.
