Egypt Sends Note of Protest to UN Security Council Over Launch of Ethiopia's GERD
"The construction and launch of the hydroelectric power plant violates international law," the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Cairo reserves the right to "take the necessary measures to protect its national interests, as provided for in the UN Charter," the ministry noted. However, it did not specify what measures it was referring to.
Ethiopia has been developing the major dam project, Africa's largest hydroelectric project, on the Blue Nile since 2012 to address its significant energy needs and foster national development.
While acknowledging concerns from downstream nations Egypt and Sudan regarding potential water scarcity, Addis Ababa has consistently emphasized its commitment to equitable and reasonable use of the Nile waters without causing significant harm.
Ethiopian officials maintain that they are open to technical discussions and cooperation mechanisms that address concerns of all riparian states.
