South Africa’s Economy Sees Strongest Growth in Two Years, Gov't Says
South Africa’s GDP grew 0.8% in Q2 2025, its fastest pace since 2023 — beating forecasts of 0.6%. The rebound was driven by manufacturing, mining, and trade, with mining output jumping 3.7%, the best since early 2021.
Household spending rose for a fifth straight quarter, while trade, catering and accommodation recorded their strongest performance in over two years.
But headwinds loom: new US tariffs of up to 30% on South African exports — from cars to citrus — threaten momentum, with early signs of pressure already visible in factory sentiment.
Earlier, Trade Minister Parks Tau said South Africa will apply anti-dumping and protective measures to safeguard local industries. The government also plans to diversify exports to Asia, the Middle East, and Africa to strengthen supply chains and boost resilience.
