GERD Inauguration: Dam to Help Africa 'Emerge From Economic Slavery,' Says Ethiopian Minister

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the largest in Africa, is a crucial step for the continent to achieve economic and policy freedom, according to Ethiopian Minister of Industry Melaku Alebel.

"The GERD, like the Victory of Adwa, helps Africans move away from the idea that ‘we can't,’ and ‘we can't stand without support,’ toward securing their economic and policy freedom," Alebel told Sputnik Africa at the inauguration ceremony.

The dam's power generation is essential for trade and industrial development, enabling Ethiopia to share electricity with neighboring countries like Kenya, Djibouti, and Sudan, the minister emphasized.

"This dam is not only ours; it belongs to the region and the continent," Alebel stated, adding that the facility can foster economic and political community, strengthen diplomatic ties, and contribute to Africa's overall progress.
