SCO Summit Outcomes Will Be Critical for Africa, SA Researcher Says
“The key outcome [of the SCO summit] for me is a recommitment and dedication to a new global order shaped by China and supported by regional powers and countries in the Global South,” Dr. Cliff Mboya told Sputnik Africa.
He highlighted that the summit signaled stronger collective calls against unilateral sanctions and unfair trade practices. For Africa, he stressed, “The SCO Summit outcomes are important alternative avenues and opportunities… to pursue their economic and political interests.”
Strengthening South-South Cooperation
Furthermore, there is a “sense of optimism that outcomes of this summit will be critical for Africa to integrate its development agency through the South-South Framework” while seeking political and diplomatic support from the expanded SCO membership, according to the researcher at the Center for Africa-China Studies at the University of Johannesburg.
Platforms of Collective Voice
“The SCO, BRICS, and G20 provide a collective voice for Global South countries to push back against Western-dominated institutions.”
These platforms, he noted, empower African states to forge new economic and diplomatic partnerships and strengthen their agency in the multipolar order.
Russia-China Ties as a Counterbalance
On geopolitics, Dr. Mboya pointed to the “shared vision to jointly reshape the rules and norms as a counterbalance to Western dominance,” particularly through strengthened Russia-China ties. This creates both challenges and opportunities for the Global South, offering alternatives in technology, energy, and infrastructure development.
