New Family Code Passed by Burkina Faso Parliament, Aiming for Legal Innovation, Cultural Respect
The code provides a vision for a fairer, more united Burkinabe family, Justice Minister Edasso Rodrigue Bayala said.
It now awaits President Traore's approval.
Key changes:
🟠 Promoting homosexual practices is now punishable by two to five years in prison and fines. Foreign nationals can be expelled for reoffending.
🟠 Burkinabé citizens convicted of national security crimes may lose their nationality.
🟠 Nationality is no longer automatically granted after marriage. There’s a five- to seven-year waiting period, and 10 years of permanent residence is needed for non-married applicants.
🟠 The legal age of adulthood is now 18.
🟠 Religious and customary marriages are now officially recognized and can be registered.
