Kenya, Uganda Sign Deal to Ease Border Congestion, Kenyan Ministry of Trade Says

The countries agreed on new measures to ease congestion at the Malaba and Busia border points, which have long been plagued by slow clearance and lengthy queues for traders and travelers, the ministry said in a statement.

Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui of Kenya and Uganda’s Trade Minister Wilson Mbadi toured the two key entry points on Friday, pledging to streamline operations.

The ministers committed to:

harmonised customs procedures;

upgraded infrastructure;

closer coordination among border agencies.

The Malaba and Busia crossings are among East Africa’s busiest, serving Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and wider regional markets.
