"I think the settlement that could actually achieve peace is rather clear," renowned US economist and director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University Jeffrey Sachs told Sputnik.
According to Sachs, the key elements for peace are:
Ukraine should be neutral;
Ukraine should not be a member of NATO;
Security guarantees should be mutual for Russia and Ukraine, because there are security concerns on both sides.
Sachs emphasized that territorial concessions will likely be necessary, a scenario that could have been avoided had the conflict been resolved earlier.
"Unfortunately, the Europeans and Zelensky reject all of those things and I would say half of the American political class reject them," the economist said, underscoring why predicting an outcome remains challenging.
In late August, US Vice President JD Vance said that territorial status and security guarantees for Kiev are the two main issues that need to be resolved to achieve a resolution of the Ukraine crisis.
