Turning Soil Data into Harvests: Ethiopian Innovator Triumphs at BRICS 2025
Zelalem Endalew, Gold Medalist at the 2025 BRICS Skills Competition, is transforming farming with his IoT-Based Smart Irrigation Controlling & Monitoring System.
“This sensor measures NPK—nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium… Additionally, it measures soil moisture, temperature, pH value, and electrical conductivity, collecting eight types of data from the soil. Once we obtain this data, we can determine… the exact nutrient needed at the right time.”
The system, already deployed in Ethiopia’s Somali and Afar regions, empowers even remote farmers with no access to electricity or formal education to manage their crops with ease. Maize farms using the system are already thriving.
