African Media Must Counter Negative Images and 'Risk of Misrepresentation' by AI, Says Scholar
African media practitioners and scholars should join forces to combat decades of negative portrayal and reshape global perceptions of the continent, Dr. Abdulaziz Dino, head of the School of Journalism and Communication at Addis Ababa University, told Sputnik Africa.
"Africa has been a victim of images, negative images, for decades. Starting from the time of colonization, of course, until recent years, Africa has been subject to misrepresentations and distortions of its enabling image," he said on the sidelines of the 15th East African Communication Association Conference.
Addressing the rise of a multipolar world order, Dr. Dino said this shift is a crucial moment for Africa to contribute significantly to "global knowledge production" and actively promote its authentic narratives.
However, he also cautioned about the risks posed by AI in the current media landscape.
In the video, Dr. Dino explains how AI algorithms make inadequate and distorted judgments about Africa.
