Zanzibar Plans $400M Port Upgrade to Revolutionize Trade & Enable Direct Cargo Shipments

The port transformation project that will enable the region to handle large international vessels and emerge as a key commercial hub within three years, Zanzibar Ports Corporation Director General Akif Ali Khamis said.

The initiative includes upgrades to Fumba, Shumba, Mkoani, and Malindi ports, along with the development of a new dry port in Maruhubi.

Fumba Port will:

🟠become the primary gateway for Zanzibar’s imports,

🟠handle up to 12,000 containers at a time,

🟠undergo dredging to increase annual capacity to 250,000 containers,

🟠receive direct shipments from global hubs, including China, Dubai, Turkey, and the UK.

Mangapwani Port will:

🟠complete infrastructure to handle fuel and gas imports currently routed through Tanga Port,

🟠feature a one-kilometer berth capable of accommodating vessels of any size,

🟠undergo final testing, with full operations expected to reduce import costs by 20%,

🟠serve as a regional cargo hub, supporting trade with neighboring countries.

An additional $50 million will establish an international shipyard at Mangapwani, enabling local shipbuilding and maintenance for the first time. This will eliminate the need for Zanzibari vessel owners to travel to Kenya for repairs, significantly cutting costs and boosting the local maritime industry.
