Ethiopia Steps Up Fight to Reclaim Looted Artifacts, Heritage Authority Says
The authority has already taken several significant steps to reclaim valuable treasures, its Director General Abebaw Ayalew told an Ethiopian news agency.
A list of looted artifacts has been submitted to UNESCO;
Teams are actively tracing items held by foreign institutions and private collectors;
Legal actions are halting auctions of Ethiopian relics abroad.
Thanks to this, Ethiopia was recently able to restore:
the mantle of Ras Desta Damtew;
the Ethiopian Order of the Star.
The armor of Emperor Tewodros was also repatriated through similar efforts.
The country also plans to register new cultural and natural heritage sites with UNESCO, such as Al-Nejashi, the coffee ceremony, Waza (also known as Zumbara), Agew Feresegna, Halaba Sera, and Enset.
