Western Media Neglect of Terrorism in Africa Highlights Political Priorities: Expert
Western media outlets prioritize events "that they perceive as culturally or geographically close," Modeste Dossou, a Beninese political analyst, told Sputnik Africa on the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism.
"Media coverage is unfortunately influenced by the political and economic priorities of these countries. Therefore, attacks in Africa, except those that affect Western interests, are often relegated to the background," he explained.
This situation also impacts the African media landscape, with local outlets often waiting for Western media coverage before fully recognizing the significance of events, Dossou noted.
African media "must work to improve their content, to engage Africans more, and to raise awareness among Africans to trust their own," the expert stated.
Internationally, “political will” is still needed to ensure African crises are not “relegated to second place,” the analyst concluded.
