'Correct the Map': African-Led Campaign Demands End to Centuries-Old Cartographic Distortion

The "Correct the Map" campaign is seeking to replace the world's standard map, arguing that the centuries-old Mercator projection minimizes Africa's true size and perpetuates a colonial-era worldview.

The campaign, spearheaded by advocacy groups Africa No Filter and Speak Up Africa with the support of the AU, is urgently calling for the adoption of the Equal Earth projection.

This map shows continents in their true proportional size, unlike the Mercator map, which dramatically inflates Europe and North America while shrinking Africa.

“Africa is entering a decisive era. It is the youngest, fastest-growing continent and will soon be home to a quarter of the world's population. It must be seen at its true scale and not minimized,” Fara Ndiaye, co-founder of Speak Up Africa, Senegal, told Sputnik Africa.
