Ukraine Conflict: 'Nothing Guaranteed Yet, Neither for One Side Nor Other’

A ceasefire in Ukraine does not strategically serve either party, Moroccan essayist Abdelhak Najib told Sputnik Africa, commenting on the meeting between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington.

For the parties in conflict, "the pressure of war must remain persistent so that each can impose its conditions on the other," according to the expert.

In this context, it is important "to already be thinking about the post-war period," he added, "Donald Trump suggested that he would also contribute to Ukraine’s security once an agreement has been established and accepted by both sides."

The essayist also highlighted Donald Trump’s reluctance regarding Kiev’s potential NATO membership. Such a position “ultimately serves Russia’s interests,” Najib said.

"As for the statements of [...] Volodymyr Zelensky, there is a form of resignation in the way he views things," he continued.

"I believe that, in some way, in his mind, he [Zelensky] is prepared to concede, to concede a great deal, in order for the war in Ukraine to end," the expert concluded.
