Africa’s Ports Handle 22% of Intra-Regional Trade, Report on Integration Says
Africa’s maritime network spans 30,725 km with 142 routes linking 65 ports, according to a recent report "Assessing Regional Integration in Africa" by the UN Economic Commission for Africa, the African Union Commission and the African Development Bank.
However, many of the continent's ports reportedly "face efficiency challenges, being notably smaller and slower than their global counterparts."
Goods often sit for over two weeks compared to less than a week elsewhere, handling costs are 50% higher, and average arrival times are nearly four times longer than in North America, the paper said, noting the need for improvements.
