Putin, Trump, and the Illusion of a Ceasefire in Ukraine

Moscow has firmly rejected the idea of a ceasefire in Ukraine. The reasoning: Kiev and its European allies would use the pause to rearm, regroup, and prepare for new offensives, Geopolitical analyst Come Carpentier de Gourdon told Sputnik.

According to Carpentier, Putin has managed to convince Trump that the only viable outcome is a definitive peace treaty—not a temporary halt in hostilities. While such an arrangement would effectively cement Russia’s battlefield gains, it’s precisely what European states fear, since it forces Ukraine to accept the current unfavorable balance of power.

For the West, a ceasefire was a way to “buy time” in hopes of a future reversal of Ukrainian losses. But Carpentier argued this is unrealistic—and Trump, now, appears to see that too.
