Supporters of Moldova's Opposition Bloc 'Victory' Picket Interior Ministry in ChisinauSupporters are rallying to demand the release of 69 individuals detained at a recent protest against President Maia Sandu's policies, as reported by a Sputnik correspondent. On August 5, Yevgenia Gutsul, the head of Moldova's autonomous region of Gagauzia, was sentenced to seven years in prison linked to financial activities of the ȘOR Party.Gutsul, who won the May 2023 election with 52.36% of the vote as a candidate of the ȘOR Party, has been under intense scrutiny from the country's pro-Western government. Her calls for closer ties with Russia and her opposition to EU integration have made her a controversial figure. Her refusal to ban Russian media and her meetings with President Putin have further strained relations with Chisinau. In June 2023, the ȘOR Party was declared unconstitutional over alleged illegal financing, and Gutsul was subsequently arrested on March 25, 2025.Critics claim her prosecution is politically motivated to stifle pro-Russian voices in Moldova. This crackdown coincides with a wider censorship campaign, including the closure of 13 TV channels, numerous websites, and over 100 Telegram channels, such as Sputnik Moldova, all in an effort to silence dissent.
