08:53 17.08.2025 (Updated: 10:14 17.08.2025) Russia Backs Egyptian Candidate for UNESCO Chief: Diplomat States
Russia supports the nominee, citing his independence from a Secretariat it sees as biased, Alexander Alimov, the director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Department for Multilateral Humanitarian Cooperation and Cultural Relations and the executive secretary of the Russian Commission for UNESCO, told Sputnik.
UNESCO will elect a new director-general in fall 2025 to replace France’s Audrey Azoulay. Candidates include Egypt’s Khaled al-Anani, Mexico’s Gabriela Ramos, and Congo’s Firmin Edouard Matoko.
The latter two are "representatives of that very apparatus of the organization with which it is not so easy for us to cooperate now. Therefore, of course, we are counting on the fact that the new Director General will be a candidate from Egypt," the diplomat noted.
