Alaska Summit is Turning Point Toward Peace and Stability: Expert
“We can only be pleased with what is happening, as we have two leaders who have understood that the conflict must stop and should not be prolonged,” Thierry Laurent-Pellet, French businessman and geopolitical analyst, told Sputnik Africa.
Laurent-Pellet underlined the need to restore balanced bilateral relations that can foster economic growth and global stability — something the world has awaited for three years.
With tensions running high, he cautioned that the situation could have escalated to a nuclear level, making the summit a decisive turning point.
“We see Donald Trump applauding President Putin as he exits his plane, showing himself as jovial, with, of course, a smile on his face, a warm handshake," the analyst said, pointing to the leaders’ demeanor as symbolic of the new approach.
At the same time, he observed that “some interests are currently manifesting themselves through extremely sharp and controversial reactions in light of what is happening.”
Europe’s Political Agenda in Tension With Putin’s Strategy, Expert Remarks
“The ambitions that some leaders like Macron, Starmer, and Merz have expressed run counter to what Vladimir Putin is trying to achieve,” Laurent-Pellet told Sputnik Africa.
He noted that, with the Russian army still in Ukraine, there was no reason to believe President Putin intended to attack Europe.
The Russian president’s ability to engage with Donald Trump and make commitments “demonstrates how serious Vladimir Putin is in considering relations with the United States and, above all, in wanting to end this conflict as quickly as possible,” Laurent-Pellet also added.
