Ethiopian Fossil Lucy Travels to Europe for Exhibition
The famous human ancestor fossil known as Lucy has left Ethiopia for a two-month exhibition at the Czech National Museum in Prague, Ethiopian Fana broadcaster reported, citing Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa.
Discovered in 1974 in Ethiopia, Lucy’s 40% complete skeleton belongs to Australopithecus afarensis, an early human species that lived in Africa between 4 million and 3 million years ago.
“As an iconic specimen, she belongs to the whole world, so sharing her with the rest of humanity is something that everyone would love to see,” Yohannes Haile-Selassie, Director of the Institute of Human Origins at Arizona State University said.
While many scientists welcome the rare opportunity to see the fossil, some warn of risks to her fragile remains.
This is only the second time Lucy has left the country, following a 2013 tour of the US.
