Round-the-Clock Economies Set to Reshape Africa’s Urban Future
Sputnik Africa
Across Africa, the concept of 24-hour economies is emerging as a bold pathway to boost productivity, create jobs, and unlock untapped potential. By keeping industries, services, and trade running round the clock, countries aim to reimagine economic growth while tackling urbanization, unemployment, and regional integration challenges head-on.
One example of this vision taking shape is Ghana. The West African state has taken a bold step by launching a 24-hour economy policy, designed to keep industries and services running round the clock. The approach aims to tackle unemployment, maximize infrastructure use, and ease congestion — but its success will depend on reliable electricity, efficient transport, strong digital systems, and safer cities.Speaking to Global South Pole, Professor Evans Akwasi Gyasi, a Senior Consultant and Director of Trade Growth Network, Ghana, noted that while the demand for late-night goods and services already exists in many African cities, the real challenge lies in building the right infrastructure, policies, and protections for workers. He stressed that making this shift work would require coordinated efforts from governments, private investors, and communities, alongside strong safeguards for those in the informal sector. To listen to the whole discussion, tune in to the Global South Pole podcast, brought to you by Sputnik Africa. In addition to the website, you can also catch our episodes on Telegram.► You can also listen to our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Deezer, Castbox, Pocket Casts, Afripods, Podcast Addict, Overcast, and Mave Stream.► Check out all the episodes of Global South Pole.

The approach aims to tackle unemployment, maximize infrastructure use, and ease congestion — but its success will depend on reliable electricity, efficient transport, strong digital systems, and safer cities.
Speaking to Global South Pole, Professor Evans Akwasi Gyasi, a Senior Consultant and Director of Trade Growth Network, Ghana, noted that while the demand for late-night goods and services already exists in many African cities, the real challenge lies in building the right infrastructure, policies, and protections for workers. He stressed that making this shift work would require coordinated efforts from governments, private investors, and communities, alongside strong safeguards for those in the informal sector.
“There are a lot of untapped opportunities on the continent that this particular policy can unlock and create millions of jobs. It can build a climate-conscious infrastructure whilst we try to address urbanization, youth employment, and regional trade integration. So yes, there are a lot of benefits we can get. One of them is we can accelerate our inclusive economic growth. Imagine every sector of the economy running three shifts — in a twinkle of an eye, that creates two additional positions for every job we offer at the moment,” he said.
