National Convention Opens in South Africa to Launch Nationwide Dialogue
Speaking at the event, President Cyril Ramaphosa called for unity to address economic hardship, unemployment, inequality, poverty, and declining trust in institutions, stressing the need to adapt to a rapidly changing world.
Over 1,000 delegates are attending, but major parties — the Democratic Alliance, former President Jacob Zuma’s MK, and the Economic Freedom Fighters — are boycotting, alleging African National Congress electoral motives. Former President Thabo Mbeki and other public figures also refused to join, citing poor preparation.
A previous national convention in 1991–1992 paved the way for South Africa’s transition from apartheid to democracy.
