The AU has endorsed the “Correct The Map” campaign by Africa No Filter, calling on governments and international organizations to abandon the 16th-century Mercator projection in favors of one that reflects Africa’s actual scale.
"It might seem to be just a map, but in reality, it is not," AU Commission deputy chairperson Selma Malika Haddadi told Western media, warning that the Mercator distorts perceptions by making Africa appear "marginal" despite being the world’s second-largest continent with over a billion people.
The map distorts the relative sizes of continents, exaggerating regions near the poles such as North America and Greenland, while reducing the scale of Africa and South America. Despite criticism, it remains widely used in schools and on digital platforms.
