African Health Leaders Urge Digital Transformation Amid Funding Cuts

"The future of health is digital," Sosthenes Bagumhe, General Secretary of the Pan African Health Informatics Association, told Sputnik Africa at the 3rd Health Tech Policy Summit in Ethiopia, calling for accelerated innovation to overcome Africa's healthcare challenges.

Bagumhe emphasized the need for collaboration to address funding gaps. He stated that the question is not if digital health will transform the sector, but rather how quickly we can scale innovations to save lives.

The official highlighted global knowledge-sharing to advance integrated digital development. He also praised Africa CDC’s role in unifying continental strategies, including AI policies, data governance, and pandemic readiness.

Stressing AI's "pivotal role" in medical innovation, he urged immediate South-South cooperation to harness AI and build self-reliant health infrastructure.
