Nigeria Remains Africa’s Top Petroleum Producer, Ahead of Algeria
The West African country's crude oil production increased slightly in July, surpassing its OPEC quota of 1.5 million barrels per day (bpd) for the third time this year, according to the August 2025 OPEC Monthly Report.
Direct reports by Nigeria showed output at 1.507 million bpd (up 2,000 bpd from June).
OPEC Secondary sources estimated 1.559 million bpd (up 16,000 bpd).
Despite past struggles with meeting quotas due to theft and pipeline vandalism, recent measures—including NNPC’s 2024 production emergency declaration and a $21 million investment in flow station metering—appear to be yielding results.
OPEC also noted Nigeria’s new tax reforms, set for 2026, aim to boost revenue and economic growth, while private sector activity improved in July.
