Kenya Seeks International Funding for $2 Billion Expansion of Nairobi's Main Airport

To support the project, which includes a second runway and a new terminal, the government has invited development partners, including:

🟠the Japan International Cooperation Agency,

🟠China Exim,

🟠KFW,

🟠the European Investment Bank,

🟠the African Development Bank.

A contractor will be selected once financing is secured, Transport Minister Davis Chirchir said.

To finance infrastructure projects, Kenya will also issue a $1.36 billion bond for road construction, according to Chirchir.

The new approach involves building the airport infrastructure first and later offering a concession, a shift from the previous plan with India’s Adani Group, which was canceled last year following US charges alleging bribery and investor deception—accusations the Adani Group denies.
