Green Gold: Africa’s Race to Lead the Hydrogen Era
Sputnik Africa
As the world shifts toward cleaner, more sustainable energy sources, green hydrogen is emerging as a game-changing solution with the potential to decarbonize industries, power economies, and create a greener future. For Africa, this represents not just an energy transformation but an economic revitalization.
The continent’s vast renewable resources—abundant sunlight, strong winds, and untapped land—make it uniquely positioned to lead the global green hydrogen market. Countries like South Africa, Namibia, and Egypt are already making strides. But as the sector takes shape, experts stress the need for collaboration, infrastructure development, and industrial planning to ensure long-term benefits for the continent.

Green Gold: Africa’s Race to Lead the Hydrogen Era

In a conversation with Global South Pole, Dr. Nelson Chipangamate, Associate Researcher and Head of Program and Business Development at the University of Witwatersrand’s Mining Institute in South Africa, highlighted Africa’s need to move beyond raw green hydrogen exports and focus on building local capacity for hydrogen-based manufacturing. He emphasized that this approach is critical to retaining the industry’s benefits within the continent.
“When you look at the strategies created so far around the green hydrogen economy, many are focused on export. That’s a huge risk because we’ll be exporting jobs to other continents, especially developed countries. To mitigate this, we need to add value within Africa, like manufacturing electrolyzers, so those jobs stay here. But we also must create local demand. Even if we want to use green hydrogen domestically, unless we build demand, it will be difficult because producers will look for ready markets. If we create that demand, it will encourage local green hydrogen production,” Dr. Chipangamate explained.
