Former Chadian PM Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison, His Party Says
Succes Masra, leader of The Transformers opposition party, was also ordered to pay a fine of 1 billion CFA francs ($1.78 million), the movement said.
A N'Djamena court found him guilty of:
spreading hate and xenophobic messages linked to an intercommunal conflict in May, which resulted in 42 deaths.
The trial began on Wednesday, split into two parts, according to local media:
▪against over 70 men accused of carrying out the May massacre;
▪against Masra, accused of inciting it.
"I do not recognize any of the facts alleged against me," Masra was quoted as saying at sentencing. The defense team will reportedly appeal the court's ruling.
Masra went into exile in 2022 but returned the next year and was appointed prime minister by President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno—he served only for five months. In 2024, he ran for presidential election—but lost to the incumbent president.
