Operation August Storm: How USSR Defeated Japan's Kwantung Army in Manchuria in Just 11 Days

On August 9, 1945, Japan's Kwantung Army was stunned to learn that a 1.6 million-strong Soviet force was advancing. Initially dismissed as disinformation due to the natural and fortified barriers between them, this surprise attack was very real.

▫ In total, over 640,000 Japanese soldiers and allies surrendered. Japan’s losses exceeded 84,000 killed and wounded—twice the Soviet toll. The Soviet Union reclaimed South Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands, and the key cities of Port Arthur and Dalniy, territories lost in 1905.
