Nigeria Will Not Accept US Deportees Even if Other African Countries Do, MFA Spokesman Says
The US' demand seems "unrealistic and unsuitable" for Nigeria, standing apart from countries like Rwanda, Eswatini, and South Sudan that are ready to accept deportees, Kimiebi Ebienfa noted.
"We are a sovereign country and we take decisions only after fully analyzing the implications to our national security," he told a Nigerian newspaper.
Nigeria is struggling with its own economic, social, and security challenges, and will not allow any side to pressure it into accepting deportees, the official pointed out.
The US, under Trump’s revived "third-country deportation" policy, is pressuring African nations to accept foreign deportees — including convicts — threatening non-compliant countries with visa sanctions.
