From Uranium Giant to Nuclear Player: Namibia's Cabinet Backs the Bid

The cabinet approved Namibia's formal application to join the Nuclear Suppliers Group, Minister of Information Emma Theofelus announced.

The NSG is a coalition of 48 nuclear supplier countries committed to preventing nuclear proliferation through strict export guidelines.

Key cabinet decisions:

🟠The Ministry of International Relations will serve as the main NSG application coordinator and will set up a cross-ministry team to follow NSG rules.

🟠A ministerial team was authorized to lobby the IAEA Director General and NSG Chair during the IAEA General Conference in Vienna.

🟠The Ministry of Industries and Mines was tasked with setting up an independent nuclear regulator and national safety and security mechanisms.

Namibia's uranium mines supply around 10% of global output; the government supports expanding mining and has shown growing interest in developing nuclear power, according to the World Nuclear Association.
