Ex-Zambian President's Burial Battle Escalates – Repatriation Halted as Family Seeks Appeal
The family of Edgar Lungu opposed a South African court's ruling, insisting in an appeal application that no agreement with Zambia was reached on repatriation.
Details of the Zambia vs. Lungu family case:
Former President Edgar Lungu died on 5 June 2025 in South Africa, while receiving medical treatment, and the Zambian government announced a state funeral in Lusaka;
The family initially agreed to repatriate the remains on 18 June 2025, but on repatriation day, they withdrew consent and opted for private burial in SA, according to Justice Ledwaba;
Zambia filed an application in the Pretoria High Court seeking enforcement of the agreement — and won. The court ruled a valid agreement existed and ordered the family to hand over the body to Zambian representatives.
As the family lodged an appeal bid, the repatriation order is stayed pending the appeal decision.
Lungu, who died at the age of 68, was president of Zambia between 2015 and 2021.
