South Africa Upholds Approval for New Nuclear Plant Near Cape Town
South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment has confirmed the environmental approval for Eskom to build and operate a nuclear power station in Duynefontein, Western Cape.
Minister Dion George said the decision came “after thorough consideration and consultation,” following years of appeals from environmental groups since the initial authorization in 2017.
George stated he had “carefully reviewed the Environmental Impact Assessment Report” and an independent peer review, acting in line with the National Environmental Management Act and weighing environmental, social, and economic factors.
The approval does not give Eskom immediate permission to begin work; the utility must still secure all other legal permits. “The granting of an Environmental Authorization does not exempt an applicant from complying with any other applicable legal requirements,” George noted.
The department reaffirmed its commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future, linking the project to inclusive growth, job creation, and poverty reduction.
